The following is excerpted from a email sent by Tom Matheson, ILM Warning Coordination Meteorologist to area Skywarn net coordinators. Good advice is worth reiterating here:

"Check the daily hazardous weather assessment, issued before sunrise to give a 'heads-up'...

"Watch issuance should be followed by a phone call to the Spotter Line 1.800.697.3901 from whoever is involved in local net activation. This has worked well...we can advise more specifically about the 'window of opportunity' for severe weather in the local area and the need to activate the net...

"Small area or small time -scale severe weather often develops which is below Watch issuance criteria, but we issue warnings all the same. For these events, net activation is not always done, but please know we are always desperate for reports...

"Whoever is running the net should accumulate information on a log and relay fresh info via 1.800 phone, or via the Wilmington repeater to the folks coordinating Skywarn from around Wilmington...

"Think of yourselves as a militia...a citizens group with an interest in protecting their neighbors, in this case against the effects of severe weather..."
