THE GRAND STRAND
AMATEUR RADIO CLUB

October 2002

From the President's Desk……………

We were glad to have Dr. Jim Boehner N2ZZ attend the GSARC club meeting on October 7th. Jim is a candidate for ARRL Section Manager. As I mentioned at the meeting, Jim asked to come to our meeting and I agreed. The incumbent, Pat Hensley N4ROS, hasn't made any request to attend a meeting. If she asks she would be welcomed.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the club members who helped us through our financial difficulty. We got the three bills paid (insurance, website and the hamfest ad) and have $1690+ in the bank. My sincere thanks to all who helped us.

Please don't forget the special meeting that KF4CJE has scheduled for October 26th at the Red Cross building. It is important.

Beachfest 2002 is coming up on November 9th. We need volunteers to help with the cooking, collecting tickets, etc. If you wish to volunteer, please contact either Don KD4RZW or myself. This will be the main topic of discussion at the November meeting.

The year is coming to an end. The nominating committee was chosen at the October meeting. Members are Dawn KG4TAZ, Mary AE4BX, Gene K4TSU, Jim KF4CJE and Gordon KE4HXL. If you wish to run for an office next year please contact one of the committee members. Nominations will also be made from the floor at the November meeting.

73's to y'all
Gordon Mooneyhan KE4HXL.

MINUTES
GSARC MEETING
OCTOBER 7, 2002

The meeting was opened at approximately 7:05 pm.

Treasurer's report: As of today the club has $1691.66 in the account. ATV equipment was sold to AD4TZ for $2000.00. Approximately $250.00 in donations were received from club members. All critical bills have been paid.

Minutes of September's meeting were accepted.

Dr. Jim Boehner N2ZZ - who is running for section manager was our guest speaker. He presented his plans if elected, one of which was to add six assistant section managers to have adequate coverage during an emergency situation. Dr. Boehner was the only candidate that asked to speak at our club.

Beachfest - There will be an admission fee of $1.00 per person. Tickets can be used for door prizes. Dawn KG4TAZ suggested we handle door prizes like a Chinese Auction so that guests can purchase tickets for the door prize they want to win, and a bucket for each prize will be available so hopefully this will help the club earn more money. Individuals buying a table will receive free tickets. November's meeting will be all about the beach fest.

Buddy showed the club jacket which is available for advance purchase. So far only a couple of members expressed interest. It is a very nice jacket for the price. It is $20.00 without your name and $23.00 with your name.

KF4CJE has sent a letter to all club members regarding his concerns about the club. He will have a meeting scheduled for Saturday October 26, 2002 at 9:00 am. The executive committee is asking that everyone plan to attend this very important meeting. More information will be available on the web site and in the newsletter.

New Business:

Repeater abuse. Gordon was on his way to work the day of the MS bike ride and signed on the repeater. He was told to get off the frequency because there was a net running. The net was being held by the Mecklenburg Amateur Radio Society, which did not have permission to use the repeater. They understood permission was granted by an article in the SERA Journal where it stated that they were granted permission in the past. Gordon sent letters to the MARC and to the MS society. Gordon has received numerous Emails on this issue and he has made it clear that permission of the GSARC must be granted to use our repeater for a net and all emergency rules apply.

A nominating committee was established: Dawn KG4TAZ, Mary AE4BX, Gordon KE4HXL, Gene KE4TSU and Jim KF4CJE were appointed. Nominations must be presented at the next meeting.

Bill W2UAF suggested we have an honor roll for contacts. Perhaps we can give out certificates to those with the most contacts, i.e. how far did you get, 440 and higher contacts, DXCC, etc. Place a list of all honor roll recipients on the web page. A great place to discuss your contacts would be during the rag chew portion of nets.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Dawn Sapio KG4TAZ, Secretary.

Lloyd Mitchell KD4HTW of Florence SC sent a release and invitation to use the new Marion Co. Repeater:

The KD4HTW Marion Co. Repeater, 147.000 (-600khz), is back on the air. The new machine is a 100 w Motorola MSR Repeater and has a full time access tone of 192.8 hz.

The MSR has much better sensitivity than the duplexed Mitrek mobile and the receive range has increased. We are planning some further improvements such as replacing the cable-tv 75 ohm feedline with 50 ohm heliax cable, and possibly adding a second antenna (db224) with the proper harness to effectively create a db228 on the very top of the tower. Donald Bryant KB4RRC tuned the machine for optimum use.

Please use the repeater and let Joe Rogers (Buddy) know how it's doing.

Questions can be sent to Lloyd's Email address lloydm75@hotmail.com.
